Dump Trailer Rental vs. Junk Removal: Cost Comparison for Utah Projects
Most people in Utah County face this question at least once: you have a cleanup, a demo project, or a major yard overhaul, and you are deciding between renting a dump trailer yourself or calling a junk removal company to haul everything away. Both are legitimate options. The right one depends entirely on the size of your project, how much of your own time it will take, and whether the work requires labor you would rather not do.
What junk removal actually costs
Junk removal pricing in Utah County typically runs $300 to $400 for a half-load and $500 to $700 for a full truck load, sometimes more depending on the company, the materials, and whether access is difficult. Those numbers go up with heavy items like appliances, mattresses, or concrete, which carry surcharges at most services.
What you are paying for: their crew, their truck, their insurance, their dump fees, and their profit margin. When a project actually requires labor — items you cannot move yourself, second-floor access, or debris that needs sorting — that price is often worth it. When you are doing the work yourself and just need somewhere to put it, you are paying for services you are not using.
What a dump trailer rental actually costs
Gritmoor rents three trailer sizes in Utah County:
- 5×10: $50/day (two-day minimum)
- 6×12: $75/day
- 7×14: $85/day
Weekly rates are significantly lower per day. Delivery is available if you do not have a tow vehicle.
You load it on your schedule, you haul as much as you want within the load limit, and you return it when the job is done. For multi-day projects, you keep the trailer for however many days the work takes without it going back to a lot each night.
The math on a real project
Take a full garage cleanout over a weekend. A junk removal company might quote $500 to $700 for a full load — or more if it takes two trips. Renting a 6×12 trailer for Saturday and Sunday is $150, plus any delivery fee if applicable. If you are spending two days loading debris either way, the rental saves $350 or more on that single job.
A roofing tear-off that takes three days of work: a junk removal company would charge by volume or weight for multiple pickups. Three days with a 6×12 is $225. The same volume moved through junk removal on multiple pickups could run $1,000 or more.
When junk removal makes sense
- You are not able to load or move the items yourself
- The job is very small — a few items that would not fill even a quarter of a trailer
- You have items that require sorting, recycling, or donation, which some junk removal companies handle
- You have no tow vehicle and the delivery fee changes the math significantly
- Access to the site makes a trailer impractical (tight alley, no street parking, steep grade)
When renting makes sense
- Multi-day projects where you are loading over time
- High-volume jobs: full landscaping overhauls, roofing tear-offs, remodel cleanouts
- Projects with heavy material where junk removal surcharges would add up fast
- Jobs where you want flexibility on timing — load when you can, return when done
We are a rental company, but we also do junk removal. When people call us for a rental and describe a job that is a better fit for a removal crew, we tell them that. The goal is that you do not spend money on the wrong service.
Describe your project and we will tell you whether a trailer or a removal crew makes more sense for your situation.
